Two women built the brand on bourbon and a name nobody forgets. Bottle POS keeps the store behind it running

The Liquor Hole opened on August 8, 2024 in Nokomis Beach, Florida — two weeks before two major hurricanes, and into a corner of the state that already had several liquor stores within a mile. Neither owner came from liquor retail. Michelle spent 30 years in the mortgage business before retiring. Sandy is a CPA and still practicing.

What they had was a shared obsession. Both families spent years hunting bottles together, and that collection transformed into a women-owned shop specializing in bourbon and tequila. In a market that crowded, standing out is everything — but it only works if the operations underneath it hold up, and neither owner wanted to be tied to a terminal to make it happen.

They chose Bottle POS as their point of sale (POS) before the doors opened — and they’ve never looked back.

What makes us unique is we are women-owned. My friend Sandy and I are two women who just love bourbon, and we’ve been collecting for years.

Standing out on a street full of liquor stores

Seven to eight competitors sit within a mile of The Liquor Hole’s front door. In that market, differentiation is the whole strategy — being women-owned, being memorable, and being the store people in Nokomis Beach actually know.

That last part is deliberate. Michelle’s 30 years in the mortgage business and Sandy’s practice as a CPA gave them a network before they had a storefront, and they use it. “We get our name out using the resources and relationships we have within the community,” Michelle says.

With one owner still practicing as a CPA, neither of them could be tied to a terminal. What they needed from a POS system came down to a short list: inventory accurate enough to trust without counting shelves, age verification built into the sale rather than bolted on, a clean integration for delivery orders, and accounting depth strong enough for a working CPA. Both of them also wanted remote access to sales, stock, costs, and margins from anywhere, plus employee clock-in and clock-out with reports that feed payroll.

Top priorities:

  • Accurate, live inventory
  • Built-in age verification
  • Delivery integration
  • Accounting depth for a working CPA
  • Remote access from anywhere
  • Time tracking that feeds payroll

Choosing a POS before the doors opened

With no legacy system to migrate and no liquor retail background to lean on, the decision carried real weight. Get it wrong, and you’re relearning the business and the software at the same time, in a market with tight competition.

So they researched it the way they research bourbon — running online comparisons, calling every vendor on the list, asking about features and inventory management, and having conversations with liquor store owners they knew about what they used and what they liked.

Next, they scheduled demos. Bottle POS answered every question on the list and has run the store since day one.

"Being able to see live inventory online from anywhere is priceless. I can log into our system from wherever I am, help employees, check sales, see what we have in stock, see how many we have, what we paid for it. You name it."

Setup: 4 cables and a 45-minute training

Hardware setup was, in Michelle’s words, no different than setting up a computer — about four cables and a power outlet. Bottle POS remoted in, configured the system, and finished in roughly an hour. Training took 45 minutes, hands-on, standing around the counter.

“I feel like I should have more to say about it, but the process was so simple that there really isn’t much to talk about. ”

The Sunday the system crashed

The moment that earned Bottle POS her loyalty wasn’t a feature. It was a holiday Sunday, peak trading hours, when the system went down — Michelle wasn’t even in the building. An employee was working alone. Both of them were panicking.

She called support, and someone picked up right away. He logged in remotely, turned her personal laptop into a working register, connected the scanner, connected the printer, and had the store selling again in about an hour. Replacement hardware was roughly a week out, so they ran the store off that laptop until it arrived.

No lost sales. No closed doors.

“He was very helpful and very patient because I am not computer-savvy at all. That alone has my loyalty forever."

It happened again with the internet. Before the store had a backup connection in place, the service dropped midday, and Michelle didn't realize there was any way to keep selling. Bottle POS already had one built in: Staff pulled the system up on their phones and kept taking credit card payments until the connection came back.

"If you do have a problem, there’s always a solution, and the solution is usually very fast. Every time we’ve had an issue, I’ve panicked, called support, and within 30 minutes we’re back up and running."

Running a crowded-market store from a phone

A customer asks whether the store has something. Michelle answers from her phone in under a minute: whether it’s in stock, how many, how well it sells, what they paid, and what they charge. The auto ranking screen, which grades every product A through D based on sales performance, is the one she says she stares at constantly — it decides what gets reordered and what gets cut.

Pricing gets the same treatment. When a new product is entered, one button shows the average price across the state, so decisions get made against the market instead of a guess. In a mile with eight competitors, that matters. Promotions run on the same logic: 50 to 100 items every month, scheduled by date range, built in about 15 minutes.

The back office handles everything else. Employees clock in and out on the system, so their hours build the timesheet automatically. When someone forgets to punch, Michelle corrects it herself instead of chasing paperwork, pulls the timesheet report, and payroll is done. Sandy runs orders, pays people, and manages the accounting side from anywhere, without setting foot in the store.

"There is nothing we can’t do from the system. Even promotions are easy. If you want to put 50 products on promotion, it’s literally two clicks."

With the operations handled, the owners can spend their time on the part that actually separates them from the eight stores down the road: stocking their favorite picks, showcasing local brands, designing fun merch, and connecting with a community that knows their name.

What keeps The Liquor Hole ahead in a crowded market

A liquor-specific system that two first-time owners could learn in 45 minutes and run from their phones — inventory, pricing, promotions, compliance, and payroll in one place.

01

Inventory in your pocket

Check stock, quantity, cost, price, and sales performance from any phone in under a minute — without walking the shelves or calling the store.

02

Auto ranking (ABCD)

Every product is graded A through D based on sales performance, so reorder and cut decisions are made on data instead of instinct.

03

Statewide price check

One button shows the average price across the state when a new product is entered, so pricing is set against the market.

04

Scheduled promotions

Put 50 to 100 products on promotion by date range in two clicks. A full month takes about 15 minutes.

05

Time tracking and payroll

Employees clock in and out on the system. Fix a missed punch, pull the timesheet report, submit it, and payroll is done.

06

Cloud-based back office

Manage orders, payments, and accounting remotely, so the back office isn’t tied to the counter.
